Solve the QuickBooks Error -6144 -82 in Few Simple Steps

QuickBooks is accounting software created by Intuit and helps to manage the business finances in one place. It is used by more than 1.3 million users in the world because it comes with the country edition. Intuit also provides the support for QuickBooks files. As there are many features in this software so the small corruption or error can turn into a huge disaster. Some errors are update related which is caused by the following reasons:

  • Multiple instances of the QuickBooks on the single system. (Example: QuickBooks Enterprise solution 7.0 and premier edition 2007)
  • Firewall or internet security related setting


According to Google Adwords Monthly Searches, the QuickBooks error -6144, -82 is searched by many users. This error occurs for the following reasons:

  1. If QuickBooks .TLG (Transaction Log File) or .ND (Network Data) files are damaged.
  2. If the user permission has not been set up to share the company file

Let’s discuss the solutions to troubleshoot this problem one by one:

Solution 1: To solve the corruption, rename the .TLG and .ND files of QuickBooks company file. A log file can be larger than the company file and it depends on the number of transactions. An .ND file is approx 1 MB in size. When company file got corrupted then a user can restore the file from the backup file. Now see the steps to rename .TLG and .ND files:

  • Go to the company files location and rename the .TLG and .ND files. For example, if your company file name is my_company_file then .TLG and .ND files will be: my_company_file.QBW.TLG & my_company_file.QBW.ND
  • Right click on the file and click on the rename option.
  • Now open the QuickBooks Database Server Manager. To start this, click on the Start button->Programs->QuickBooks->QuickBooks Data Server Manager.
  • Select the folder where QuickBooks file is present.
  • Scan the folder
  • Now open the file.

Solution 2:  To set the user permission, follow these steps:

  • Go to Company tab
  • Click on the Users->Set Up Users and Roles
  • Enter the password to access the information.
  • Now select the user name from the user list and change the role according to the requirement.

Solution 3: This solution is related to multiuser access.

  • Start QuickBooks without opening a company file. To do this, hold the Ctrl key and click on the QuickBooks icon. Press the Ctrl button until QuickBooks settles.
  • Go to Files->Utilities->Stop Hosting multiuser access
  • Now again go to the Files->Utilities->Start Hosting multiuser access

Solution 4: A third party tool like Stellar Repair for QuickBooks Software is the only software which repairs .QBW files. The software is easy to use and gives the facility to save the repaired file in the desired location.

Sum Up: So these are the few reasons and their solution which are responsible for QuickBooks Error -6144, -82. Always take the backup to prevent your data from any corruption.
